For purposes of this article, I am going to discuss search engine optimization for both Yahoo! and Google. These are two different search engines and have different processes for determining which pages are ranked higher in their respective search engines.

Many optimization techniques you employ for Google will help you with your ranking in Yahoo!.

FIRST STEP: Keywords and Phrases

Before you begin, you need to review your web site and decide what keywords and phrases you want to target. If you have a business that services a local area, you want to focus on keywords that will attract "your" targeted customers, not necessarily everyone on the internet.

For example, if your auto repair shop is located in Orange County, then you may want to look at keyword phrases such as "orange county auto repair" or "newport beach auto repair" instead of simply "auto repair." The more simple phrase does not apply to visitors too far outside of Orange County since they are more apt to go to a repair shop close to home.

In order to be successful on the internet, you want to focus on 5-10 keywords and phrases and find phrases that are searched a good amount and do not have a lot competition. One of the most used tools on the internet is the Yahoo! keyword search tool. Through this tool, you can search specific keywords and phrases and see how many times a specific keyword was typed in Yahoo's search engine last month. You can download a FREE software from Softnik called Good Words - through this tool, you can analyze keywords and phrases.

This tool is extremely useful because you can review what keywords and phrases are more important to you and what you need to do to your site to optimize for those keywords.

EXAMPLE - KEYWORDS AND PHRASES
Using the example above and downloading the software from Softnik, the word "auto repair" was searched 142,502 times last month by Yahoo visitors. However, "auto repair orange county" was only searched 2,383 times. The latter keyword phrase is more targeted and easier to get higher search engine rankings for both Yahoo! and Google
